Our Story
The Nottingham Mavericks are one of Britain’s largest and most successful university ice hockey clubs, bringing together some of the region’s most talented student athletes.
Established in 2001 and based in the East Midlands, the Mavericks call Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena home and compete across the British Universities Ice Hockey Association (BUIHA), offering players the opportunity to compete at a high level throughout their university career.
With a proud history, a competitive mindset and a passionate community, the Mavericks are more than just a hockey club — they’re a team, a community and an experience that stays with you long after university.
THE NOTTINGHAM VARSITY
The Nottingham Varsity Series brings together the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University in one of the UK’s biggest student sporting rivalries. At the heart of the series is the highly anticipated Varsity Ice Hockey fixture.
Played at Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena, the game is one of the largest university ice hockey events outside North America, regularly attracting thousands of passionate supporters and creating an unforgettable atmosphere for players and fans.
The fixture is also broadcast through student media, allowing supporters around the world to follow the action as the two universities battle for the Varsity Trophy.
With demand for tickets consistently exceeding capacity, the popularity of Varsity Ice Hockey has led to additional fixtures being introduced in recent years — a testament to the passion and support surrounding the Mavericks and Nottingham’s university ice hockey community.
With an active roster of 120+ student-athletes, the Nottingham Mavericks offer opportunities for players of every ability to develop, compete and progress.
The club currently operates five teams across the BUIHA competition, with our A, B, C, D and E teams competing in league and cup competitions, alongside a dedicated Development Team for beginners.
Whatever your experience level, there’s a place for you at the Mavericks.
Battle of Notts
Established in 2016, the Battle of Nottingham has grown from humble beginnings into the Mavericks’ second-largest event of the year.
The annual fixture sees the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University go head-to-head at the National Ice Centre, with the event regularly attracting 500+ passionate fans.
The Battle of Nottingham gives players from across our teams the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of a huge home crowd, compete and battle for the chance to lift silverware.
Now a staple of the university sporting calendar, the event continues to grow in popularity year after year
